Destined Hearts: The Tale
of Kandarpa Ketu and Vasavadatta
In
the prosperous kingdom of Chintamani, Prince Kandarpa Ketu was enchanted by a
maiden in his dreams. Driven by the belief that they were destined to reunite,
he embarked on a quest with his loyal friend Makaranda. Their journey led them
to the Narmada River, where they overheard lovebirds discussing Vasavadatta,
the beautiful daughter of King Shringarashekhara of Kusumapura. She too longed
for a prince she had dreamt of, prompting Kandarpa Ketu to seek her out with
the help of her friend Tamalika.
Upon
meeting Vasavadatta, they recognized each other, but their joy was short-lived;
she was to marry another the very next day. In desperation, they fled on a
magical steed to the Vindhya mountains, leaving Makaranda behind. However, upon
waking, Kandarpa Ketu found Vasavadatta missing. Distraught, he nearly ended
his life, but a voice from the sky promised they would be reunited.
After
months of searching, Kandarpa Ketu discovered a stone statue resembling
Vasavadatta. When he touched it, she transformed back into her living form,
revealing she had been cursed by an ascetic. Their reunion confirmed their
bond, and King Shringarashekhara ultimately blessed their marriage. They
returned to Chintamani, where their love triumphed through lifetimes, and they
lived happily ever after.
