The stripes on a Zebra are white not black

Sham S. Misri
The white stripes on the body of a zebra are superficial tufts on the black ground colour. Zebras are descended from solid dark coloured animals. The white marks on the body of zebra are the white stripes. They merely form superficial tufts on the black coat of the zebra. The ground colour is black and the white marks are the stripes. The present day zebra is the descendent from solidly dark coloured animals, which in the late stages of evolution have been covered with transverse bars on the body.
