Lukshmi Vilas Palace —
World’s
Largest Private Home
Lakshmi Vilas Palace is in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. It is called the **world’s largest private home**, a very big house owned by a royal family. It was built for **Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III**. Construction started in **1878** and finished in **1890**.
A
British architect named **Major Charles Mant** designed it, and another
architect, **Robert Fellowes Chisholm**, finished it. The palace is **huge**: about
*30.5 million square feet** and **170 rooms**. It is about **36 times bigger
than Buckingham Palace**.
It
mixes **Indian and European styles**. It even has a golf course and an old
stepwell.
The
**Durbar Hall** is a grand room. It has colourful floors, a painted ceiling,
and stained-glass windows with Hindu gods and goddesses. The **Coronation
Room** has the king’s throne. Special paintings by **Raja Ravi Varma** remind
the king to care for his people.
The
**Gaekwad royal family still lives there**. They also open parts of the palace
for music, dance, craft fairs, and car shows. The palace is grand, but the
family says it is still a **family home**.
