Why do we sometime see ring around the moon?

A big ring of light sometime appears around the moon. When this happens there is a thin cloud made of tiny ice crystals floating high in the air. Some of the light rays from the moon pass through or between the ice crystals. When these reach our eyes, we see the moon. But when other rays strike the crystals, a strange thing happens. Instead of going straight on, the rays are bent. When they reach our eyes, they seem to come from a circle that is much bigger than the moon.

This ring is called a ‘HALO’.

Rings appear around the sun, too, and for exactly the same reasons.

Question 1) 

Ishan is thinking of a number. When he doubles the number, adds four and then multiplies the result by 3, the answer is 13. What is the number he is thinking of?

Solution for question 1)

In such questions:

Let the number he is thinking of be x.

When he doubles it, adds 4, multiplies the result by 3.

We have 3(2x+4) = 13

Or 6x + 12 = 13

Or 6x = 1

Solving the equation we obtain x = 1/6 Ans.

The following problem was for a long period considered insolvable:

A contractor orders two men to dig a 100 foot ditch. Each digger is to receive $50.

One end of the ditch is hard ground for which the contractor pays the rate of $1.25 a foot. The other end is soft ground for which the contractor pays @ 75 cents a foot.

How many feet must each dig to get exactly $50?

Solution:

            Each man digs 25 feet at $ 1.25 = $31.25

               -do-        Digs 25 feet @  0.75 = $18.75
