Zombi!

In the West Indies, there is an Island called Haiti. The People in Haiti feared to be out in a lonely place at night. They were afraid they might see a figure coming slowly towards them- a human figure, with staring eyes, moving with a slow , stiff shuffle. A Zombi!

            A Zombi was a person whose soul was stolen by an evil magician or witch and who then seemed to die. But, after the person was buried, the magician would dig up the body  and bring it back to life. When the Zombi would come to life it would then be the slave of the magician.  A zombie could see and move, but it could not think for itself. It could only do the bidding of its magician master, who might put it to endless work.  Sometimes this magician master would send him to do very bad things. The master magician would send  Zombi out at night to steal , rob, and murder!

In Jamaica and other parts of the West Indies, these creatures are known as Jumbies.
